How to Groom your Cat?

If you already have a cat and haven’t got the chance to groom it before, the chances are that the grooming process is going to be quite unpleasant for her. So you need to start by taking small steps toward the process.

Choose a time where the cat is relaxed and happy, like after eating. First, start grooming for 5 to 10 minutes. It would be a good idea to give a treat to the cat after the session. If the cat shows some signs that she is not pleased with the grooming than just stop and continue some other time. When she will get used to the process she will eventually start enjoying it.

BRUSHING BASICS

The regular brushing takes off the dead hair and the dirt from the cat. Brush in the direction that the hair lays, and be tender around the belly and chest.

For shorthaired cats, you can start with a fine-toothed metal comb. Pay attention to the pepper-like specks that can tell you it the cat has fleas. Use a bristle or soft rubber to clean the loose hair.

For longhaired cats use a wide-toothed comb to remove debris, then carefully untangle any knots. Then you can use a wire brush or a bristle brush to take off the loose hair, and maybe a toothbrush to clean the cat’s face.

Shorthaired cats can be brushed twice a week while cats with long hair may need daily brushing.

BATH TIME

We all know cats don’t really like water, and just the idea of bathing your cat can be terrifying. But the good thing is that cats don’t need a bath so much.

However, if your cat gets very dirty or sticky, she might need to get a bath eventually. For a start make the water temperature warm, not hot or cold. Take a shampoo that can be used for cats only. You can use a sink or tub where you have placed a rubber bath mat, and filled it with water of 3 to 4 inches.

Take a spray hose and wet the cat a bit. Put shampoo on the head first and down the tail, but be careful with the eyes, ears, and nose. Rinse gently and make sure that the shampoo is rinsed out. Then clean the shampoo with water. After you finish dry it with a large towel.

If your cat’s nails need clipping, do it before bath time!

PEDICURE

Doing pedicure to the cat, shouldn’t be so difficult if you have the right approach.

Spend some time training the cat to be comfortable and accepting of having her feet handled. Start doing a daily feet massage. Run your hand along its leg and then press gently with your thumb on the pad of each toe, causing the claw to extend. After some time, the cat will be quite comfortable with a foot massage.

Since the cat become accustomed to the massaging it’s fine to clip. For this you can use a quality, sharp clipper nail scissors specifically made for cats. Cut parallel to the flat of the claw, and clip off the white tip only.

Comparing with other pets, cats are very low maintenance, which is good for people keeping them as pets. But like us, your cat could use some extra help sometimes. This will keep your cat happy and healthy.
